The Diamondbacks on Monday named pitcher Archie Bradley and shortstop Chris Owings the organization’s pitcher and player of the year, respectively.
“Chris Owings and Archie Bradley had exceptional seasons,” Diamondbacks director of player development Mike Bell said in a statement. “Both Chris and Archie's stats are among the best in all of minor league baseball, and their character is second to none. We are ecstatic to honor both players with player development's most prestigious awards. Many minor league staff members spent valuable time with them to ensure that Chris and Archie develop into successful winning ballplayers in the near future.”
Bradley, 21, went 14-5 with a 1.84 ERA, two complete games, 162 strikeouts and 69 walks while limiting opponents to a .215 batting average in 26 starts between Single-A Advanced Visalia and Double-A Mobile. Among D-backs minor leaguers, Bradley ranked first in wins, ERA and strikeouts.
The right-hander was named the Southern League’s Most Outstanding Pitcher, a 2013 Sirius XM All-Star Futures Game participant, a Southern League midseason All-Star and Topps Pitcher of the Month for August while garnering Pitcher of the Week honors on three different occasions (California League, April 4-14; Southern League, May 13-19 and July 29-Aug. 5).
In two postseason starts for Mobile, Bradley went 1-1 with a 6.00 ERA with five strikeouts and five walks, guiding the BayBears to their third consecutive Southern League championship appearance.
Owings, 22, hit .330 with 31 doubles, 12 home runs, 81 RBIs, 12 triples, 20 stolen bases and 104 runs scored in 125 games for Triple-A Reno before being called up to the major leagues earlier this month. Among D-backs prospects, he ranked first in games, at-bats, batting average, hits and runs scored.
Owings became the third player in Pacific Coast League history and second straight Aces player to earn Most Valuable Player and Rookie of the Year honors (Adam Eaton, 2012; Robb Quinlan, 2002). He was named to the 2013 Sirius XM All-Star Futures Game at Citi Field and earned PCL midseason and postseason All-Star honors.
Owings was named the D-backs organizational Player of the Month for April, May and June, becoming the first farmhand in team history to garner the award in three consecutive months.
