We already knew that Lance Armstrong’s former gal pal Sheryl Crow spoke to federal investigators who were looking into Armstrong’s Tour de France-winning teams, and now in a forthcoming book, we’ll learn exactly what she reportedly told them.
According to the New York Daily News, the Grammy Award-winning musician Crow was there when Armstrong received a blood transfusion in 2004 and later told federal investigators about what she saw.
The revelation comes in the pages of “Wheelmen: Lance Armstrong, the Tour de France, and the Greatest Sports Conspiracy Ever,” due out Tuesday.
The book’s authors, Wall Street Journal reporters Reed Albergotti and Vanessa O’Connell, go into detail about Armstrong's doping scheme, and state that Crow and Armstrong took his private jet to Belgium, where he received the transfusion.
“Rather than try to hide the transfusion from her, Armstrong was completely open about it,” the book says, according to the NYDN. “He trusted that Crow would have no desire to tell the press or anyone else about the team's doping program. He explained that it was simply part of the sport — that all cyclists were doing the same thing.”
According to Albergotti and O’Connell, Crow only revealed that information to FDA investigator Jeff Novitzky after Novitzky promised her a proffer agreement, which protected Crow from any criminal prosecution in connection with the case.
Crow and Armstrong were briefly engaged in 2005 before calling it quits in 2006. Earlier this year, Armstrong admitted to doping in a televised interview with Oprah Winfrey.
