Bolts bring back QB Whitehurst, release Volek

The Chargers agreed to terms with quarterback Charlie Whitehurst on a two-year contract Friday.
Whitehurst, San Diego’s third-round pick in 2006, remained on the roster through ’09 before being traded to Seattle. He played behind Philip Rivers and Billy Volek for four seasons and did not attempt a pass.
Whitehurst played nine games for the Seahawks the last two seasons, completing 54.2 percent of his passes for 805 yards, three touchdowns and four interceptions.
San Diego swapped 2010 second-round choices with Seattle to move up 20 spots and received a 2011 third-round pick for Whitehurst on March 18, 2010.
Whitehurst started Week 17 against St. Louis on Jan. 2, 2011, a game with playoff implications in the NFC West. He completed 61.1 percent of his passes for 192 yards and a touchdown and did not throw an interception in the win, leading Seattle to a 16-6 victory and a spot in the playoffs.
Whitehurst is the eighth free agent the Chargers have signed since the league year began Tuesday, and the fifth player they’ve added who spent the 2011 season on another team.
The San Diego Chargers released veteran backup quarterback Billy Volek.
Volek, 35, has been in the NFL for 13 years (12 official seasons), including 2006-11 in San Diego. He has appeared in 39 games, starting 10, including 15 games during his tenure with the Chargers.
His most memorable appearance with the Chargers was in the 2007 postseason when he relieved an injured Philip Rivers in the fourth quarter of the AFC Divisional Playoff game in Indianapolis and led the team on an eight-play, 78-yard touchdown drive.
