Blues bringing in Martin Brodeur to practice with the team Friday
ST. LOUIS -- With the Blues announcing that goaltender Brian Elliott's status is week-to-week due to a lower-body injury, it's clear that they'll have to make do without his services for a while. Toward that end, the team announced Wednesday that veteran Martin Brodeur will start practicing with the team Friday.
If that's not an audition, what is?
"Marty has agreed to come in and practice through early next week," Blues general manager Doug Armstrong said. "We will both address the media at Friday's practice at Scottrade Center."
Brodeur, 42, played 39 games for the New Jersey Devils last season, when he shared the net with Cory Schneider. He became a free agent after the season but has not yet signed with another club.
Brodeur broke into the league with the Devils, his only NHL employer, in 1992. He has played in 1,259 NHL games, recording a 688-394-105 record with a 2.24 goals-against average and a .912 save percentage. He has won three Stanley Cups.
Elliott left Tuesday's game against Ottawa in the second period with what appeared to be a leg injury. He has an 8-4-1 record and a league-best 1.82 goals-against average.
Jake Allen, 24, is 6-2-1 with the Blues this season and clearly is capable of handling a starting role. But the Blues might not be comfortable with Jordan Binnington, called up Wednesday from their AHL affiliate in Chicago, assuming a backup role for any length of time.
