Bengals' Dalton added to Pro Bowl roster

Cincinnati Bengals quarterback Andy Dalton was added to the Pro Bowl roster Tuesday as a replacement for injured Green Bay quarterback Aaron Rodgers. He becomes the fourth member of the Bengals on the NFL's All-Star Game roster along with punter Kevin Huber, wide receiver A.J. Green and defensive tackle Geno Atkins.

Huber and Green were voted onto the original roster in combined balloting by fans, players and coaches. Atkins was added as an injury replacement last week.

This will be Dalton's second Pro Bowl appearance in his four seasons - he was voted in as one of the three AFC quarterbacks after his rookie season of 2011. Dalton was the seventh alternate in this season's voting behind the original six selections of Tom Brady (New England), Andrew Luck (Indianapolis), Peyton Manning (Denver), Tony Romo (Dallas), Ben Roethlisberger (Pittsburgh) and Rodgers.

Brady is unable to play because he and the Patriots will be preparing for Super Bowl XLIX (that would be 49 to those who can't read Roman numerals) against Seattle. Manning, Roethlisberger and now Rodgers have all been replaced because of injuries. Drew Brees (New Orleans), Matthew Stafford (Detroit) and Matt Ryan (Atlanta) were named as replacements prior to Dalton.

Dalton set a career-high by completing 64.1 percent of his passes this past season while leading the Bengals to the playoffs for a fourth consecutive time. He threw for 3,398 yards, 19 touchdowns and 17 interceptions. His 482 pass attempts this season were the lowest of his career, a result of the Bengals committing more of their offensive attack to running the ball. They finished sixth in the NFL in rushing, averaging 134.2 yards per game, including seven games in which they rushed for 139 yards or more.
