Belle Royale defeated Quiet Oasis by a half-length and won the $250,000 Gamely Stakes on Monday at Betfair Hollywood Park, giving trainer Simon Callaghan and jockey Joel Rosario back-to-back victories in the Grade 1 race.
Belle Royale ran 1-1/8 miles on the turf in 1 minute, 47.84 seconds and returned $6.60 for a $2 win bet. Callaghan and Rosario won the Gamely last year with Dubawi Heights.
Callaghan became the first trainer to win the Gamely in consecutive years since the late Bobby Frankel won with Citronnade in 2007, followed by Precious Kitten in 2008. Rosario's feat was the first by a jockey since Kent Desormeaux won in 1995 and '96.
''She came home fast, but she was doing it easy,'' Rosario said. ''She just keeps it going. That's just the way she runs. The last quarter of a mile she really turns it on.''
Quiet Oasis was ridden by Mario Gutierrez and is owned by J. Paul Reddam, two-thirds of the team behind Triple Crown contender I'll Have Another. Capitol Plan was another half-length back in third.
Belle Royale has 10 wins in 26 career starts and earnings of $358,231.
In the $100,000 Los Angeles Handicap, Roman Threat led all the way to win by 1-1/4 lengths for Hall of Fame trainer Bob Baffert.
Ridden by Rafael Bejarano, Roman Threat ran six furlongs in 1:08.57 and paid $3.80 as the 9-10 favorite.
Centralinteligence was second, and defending champion Camp Victory was another 1-1/2 lengths back in third.
Rail Trip, making his first start as a 7-year-old, finished fourth. It was his first race in California since he finished second in the 2010 Hollywood Gold Cup.
Roman Threat has two wins in three career starts and earnings of $123,600.
