Chane Behanan has been removed from the University of Louisville's defending national champion basketball team.

The news came Thursday afternoon from Louisville coach Rick Pitino, who said Behanan violated university policy and has been suspended indefinitely. Pitino told reporters there was a chance Behanan could return, but that "it wasn't probable."

"He has a very difficult time understanding life's values," Pitino said. "We're more concerned right now about Chane the person than the player. We want to see him prosper as a person. Chane wouldn't hurt a fly. He's a good person. But it's very difficult for him to follow rules."

Pitino said Behanan is still enrolled at Louisville but is no longer living with the basketball team. He averaged 9.8 points and 6.5 rebounds while starting 37 of 39 games last year as a sophomore.

Louisville was voted No. 3 in the preseason coaches poll, released Thursday.

Behanan is a Cincinnati native who moved to Bowling Green, Ky., for his last two years of high school.
