Beau Allen: Life between workouts (and avoiding candy)

I'm pretty much working out every day. On Monday, Wednesday and Friday in the mornings we'll do workouts on the football field, kind of more position specific drills, 1-on-1s, footwork drills, run reads, things like that. Then we'll also work on our 40, our running mechanics, our pro agility technique. Then we come back and do upper body on Mondays and Thursdays, then we do lower body on Tuesdays and Saturdays and on Tuesdays and Thursdays in the morning we do speed agility and jump work, and mixed in there too on Wednesdays is yoga.
It is just a lot of different work to work on all the things that go into training for testing at Pro Day. Whether it be flexibility, running mechanics, how to jump, how to test well ... all the little tricks of the trade to shave off seconds and gain inches in your jumps and gain a rep or two on your bench.
That's kind of what I've been doing every day. There's not a whole lot that I'm doing besides simply working out. I've had a lot of down time, so I've been reading a lot of books and crushing Netflix.
It's been crazy for me because I'm not taking classes right now, obviously, and when you're a student-athlete at Wisconsin you rarely have any free time. You're always shuttling between class and practice and lifts. Getting rehab in the training room and watching film. You really look forward to all the free time you have and plan it out.
I remember back in the fall during the season looking forward so much to doing nothing. And it's funny now because it's the complete opposite for me. I've got nothing to do really, so I look forward to doing something. I look forward to working out and being active. It's just a different lifestyle than I was accustomed to in the fall. It's weird not being busy 24-7.
I work out anywhere from 5-6 hours on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Fridays. For me, 5-6 hour days are nothing. You get used to 12-14 hour days during the season. Here it is just working out, so it's kind of bizarre.
So like I said, I've been catching up on my Netflix. I've been crushing "Parks and Recreation." I just picked up "Sherlock," which is a sweet show on BBC that I highly recommend to everyone. So I got addicted to that.
I live in an apartment alone, so that's kind of depressing. But I hang out a lot with the guys I work out with. Athletics Edge is a smaller facility and that's one of the reasons I wanted to work out here -- you get a lot of individual attention during the workout and during the technique and performance stuff.
I'm in the big group of linemen there. There's me, another defensive tackle from Canada, Evan Gill; Howard Jones is an outside linebacker/defensive end from D2 Shepherd University, Ulrick John is an offensive tackle from Georgia State and David Foucault is an offensive lineman from Canada. We work out every day together, and there's also a couple of position groups of running backs, wide receivers and defensive backs. So I mostly spend my time with those guys. Hang out, work out together, go to movies ... so not like I'm not sitting down here doing nothing. I get to hang out with some like-minded people who are in the same situation.
I love candy. I have a huge sweet tooth, I definitely got that from my mom. We had a thing last season that the media picked up on that whenever Chris Borland made a tackle because I was occupying blockers he'd buy me candy. He bought me Trolli eggs.
I guess Trolli read about it or heard about it in the media, so they contacted me on Twitter and had a funny little picture of a gummy worm dressed up as a football player. That was a big moment for me, I thought it was really cool. Because Trolli candy has been a favorite of mine forever.
@Trolli_USA great pic and thanks for the shout out, this is a big moment for me #trollieggs #trollibrightcrawlers

After the season was over, they sent me a CARE package, which was like all these really cool Trolli t-shirts and a whole bunch of candy. It was pretty funny. I mean, good on them. I love candy.
But now I'm trying to lock down and get my body right for Pro Day and not eat candy -- which is going to be hard for me, so I appreciate all the support from friends, family and fans. It's going to be tough, but I think I can do it.
I can't get any more CARE packages to Trolli! They're making it hard for me. I gave all the candy to the guys I was training with. They probably don't eat as much candy as I do! Not anymore. I have a major sweet tooth, I'll have to substitute some dried fruit or something like that. We'll see how it goes.
