There has been an odd tradition going on around the Duke Blue Devils campus. It started with the original 'Speedo Man,' a Duke grad student, who in 2003 stripped down to his underwear and danced while UNC's Jackie Manuel shot (and missed) two free throws.
In 2005, Duke's second Speedo Man showed up while UNC's Marvin Williams shot (and missed) two free throws.
In 2008, a third Speedo Man showed up at a Duke vs. UNC game. However, this time UNC's Deon Thompson shot two free throws and missed the first one, but made the second one. Many Duke supporters say 'Speedo Man III' took the costume way too far, and some called his dance "inappropriate."
Hopefully the Speedo Guys will retire the joke after the third and unsuccessful last attempt.
