MADISON, Wis. -- Wisconsin point guard Traevon Jackson injured his right foot during Sunday's game against Rutgers and will not begin rehab for 2-3 weeks, according to a school-issued news release.
ESPN's Jeff Goodman reported earlier Monday that Jackson suffered a fracture and would miss about six weeks. The Associated Press reported Jackson will have surgery Thursday.
Jackson did not play the final 12 minutes, 17 seconds of Wisconsin's 67-62 loss to Rutgers after he landed awkwardly while attempting to contest a 3-pointer by Myles Mack with the score tied at 46.
"I'm just trying to enjoy the process, learn from this and trust in Christ," Jackson said in a release. "I know my teammates will come together and be stronger because of this. I'm looking forward to coming back mentally stronger than ever and more prepared to win championships and finish off the year and the seniors' careers the right way."
The loss of Jackson is significant for a Wisconsin team with national championship aspirations. He had started 84 consecutive games for the Badgers and leads UW with 49 assists. Jackson was averaging 9.4 points per game and ranked sixth in the Big Ten in free throw accuracy, shooting 85.4 percent. He also is one of the most battle-tested players on the roster and has made four game-tying or game-winning jumpers in his career.
Bronson Koenig is expected to take over the starting point guard role for Wisconsin. Koenig earned his first start Sunday against Rutgers in place of center Frank Kaminsky, who missed the game while battling concussion-like symptoms. Koenig scored 12 points and made 5 of 7 field-goal attempts.
No. 7 Wisconsin (15-2, 3-1) plays host to Nebraska (10-6, 2-2) at 8 p.m. Thursday.
