MADISON, Wis. -- University of Wisconsin quarterback Tanner McEvoy was the victim of what Madison police are calling a "strong armed robbery" early Sunday morning in Madison, according to a school release. McEvoy suffered minor injuries and had his wallet, watch and iPhone stolen.
According to the police report, McEvoy was struck in the head near the intersection of Wisconsin Avenue and East Dayton Street around 1:45 a.m. Witnesses reported seeing two males and two females near the victim at the time of the attack. All fled toward the Capitol Square.
McEvoy, who was treated for two head cuts, resumed team activities Monday, according to the school release.
"First and foremost, we are happy that Tanner is physically OK after this attack," Wisconsin football coach Gary Andersen said in the release. "It's terrible to get a call about something like this, but we are grateful the injuries were not serious."
McEvoy transferred to Wisconsin this summer after spending one season at Arizona Western College and is expected to compete for the starting quarterback job in fall camp with Curt Phillips and Joel Stave. Last season, McEvoy threw for 1,943 yards with 25 touchdowns and six interceptions and was ranked as one of the top junior college dual-threat quarterbacks in the country.
McEvoy is the second Wisconsin football player that has been the victim of a downtown assault in as many summers. Last August, just days before fall practice began, five men assaulted running back Montee Ball in a much publicized incident as he walked home with friends during the early-morning hours. He sustained a concussion and missed the start of fall camp.
Fall practices begin this season on Aug. 5, and Wisconsin's first game is Aug. 31 against UMass.
