ATLANTA — Braves outfielder B.J. Upton left Friday's game against the Reds early on, after sustaining an injury while diving for a line drive in the first inning.
With Atlanta trailing 2-0 and two outs in the opening frame, Upton rushed to make a play on Todd Frazier's low-to-the-ground liner.
But Upton dropped to his knees just a fraction too early, momentarily losing sight of the ball — which caromed off the glove and then onto Upton's upper left thigh before hitting the grass.
After that, Upton collapsed to the ground, writhing in pain. He would eventually walk off the field, assisted by the Atlanta trainers. According to team officials, Upton strained a right adductor muscle.
Frazier, in turn, was credited with an RBI triple on the play, boosting the Reds' first-inning lead to 3-0.
B.J. Upton was replaced by Braves rookie Joey Terdoslavich, with Reed Johnson moving from right to center field.
