Arizona State's Jon Rahm has been named the 2013 Pac-12 Men’s Golf Freshman of the Year, becoming the second Sun Devil to earn the honor in the 14 years it has been awarded, joining co-Freshman of the Year Alejandro Canizares in 2003.
He also earned second-team All-Conference and was joined on the freshman team by Sun Devil Max Rottluff, who earned honorable mention All-Pac-12. Rahm becomes the third Sun Devil to earn Pac-12 Freshman of the Year honors in 2012-13, joining men’s baskeball player Jahii Carson (co-Freshman of the Year) and women’s diver Morgan Weller.
Rahm, a native of Barrika, Spain, owns a 71.72 stroke average in 40 rounds, the fourth-best mark by a freshman in the nation. Since 1984 at ASU, only Canizares carried a better stroke average as a freshman (71.65 in 2002-03). Rahm, fresh off a 10th-place finish at the Pac-12 Championships, has posted five top-10 finishes this season, including a pair of victories at the Bill Cullum Invitational and the Lamkin Grips San Diego Classic. Ranked No. 41 in the latest Golfweek rankings, he has shot 13 rounds in the 60s, including a season-low 64 at the Pac-12 Preview in October.
The Pac-12 Player of the Year is Michael Kim of California, and the Coach of the Year is Steve Desimone of California.
