After just one full practice, Arizona State freshman linebacker Chans Cox could be done for the spring with a right ankle injury. ASU coach Todd Graham suggested earlier this week it was a sprain, though the exact nature of the injury remains unclear.
Cox battled an ankle injury during his senior season at Lakeside Blue Ridge, and the injury apparently flared up after Cox went through the team's first spring practice Tuesday. He wore a walking boot Thursday and again Saturday, spending most of his time doing exercises on the sidelines.
Graham didn't quite rule Cox out for the rest of the spring, but when asked about Cox and redshirt freshman offensive lineman Stephon McCray (torn meniscus), Graham suggested that the chances of either participating much this spring are slim. He also said Cox will have surgery.
"Chans, we'll just kind of see how it goes week by week," Graham said Saturday. "They're going to do a little procedure on, so (it's) probably likely that either one of them won’t be very good (to participate this spring)."
Cox, a four-star recruit who likely will play Devilbacker, graduated high school early and enrolled at ASU in January so he could participate in spring drills. He should be ready for full participation in fall camp.
