TEMPE, Ariz. -- The fourth-ranked Arizona State softball team improved to 15-0 on Saturday by defeating Boston College and Idaho State on the second day of play at the Diamond Devil Invitational at Farrington Stadium.
The Sun Devils totaled six home runs throughout the two games, getting past Boston College 3-0 before routing Idaho State 11-1 in five innings.
Jennifer Soria, who hit her first two home runs of the year against the Bengals, led the Sun Devils with a .667 batting average, as did Amber Freeman, who totaled four hits and two runs on the night.
Haley Steele and Bethany Kemp each added three runs to ASU's offensive production, while pitchers Dallas Escobedo and Mackenzie Popescue allowed no runs while combining for 15 strikeouts.
ASU 3, BOSTON COLLEGE 0
In their second game of the Diamond Devil event, the Sun Devils shut out the Eagles (5-4) and got just enough offense to stay unbeaten.
ASU got on the board with a pair of runs in the second inning, the first when third baseman Nikki Girard singled up the middle to drive in first baseman Bethany Kemp. Later in the inning, Girard then came around to score when shortstop Cheyenne Coyle hit a sacrifice fly to center field.
The Sun Devils weren't done scoring, putting up their third and final run when outfielder Elizabeth Caporuscio homered over the right-field fence for her first long ball of the year.
With only three runs scored in the game, pitcher Dallas Escobedo put her signature on her seventh win, throwing seven scoreless innings while allowing just six hits and striking out 12.
ASU 11, IDAHO STATE 1 (5 INNINGS)
In their second game of the night and third of the Diamond Devil Invitational, the No. Sun Devils run-ruled the Bengals 11-1 with a dominant offensive performance.
ASU tallied 11 runs in only four plate appearances and was led by Jennifer Soria, who hit two home runs and recorded five RBI.
In the first frame, the Sun Devils took a 2-0 lead as designated hitter Amber Freeman scored from third on a single from first baseman Bethany Kemp before third baseman Hailey Steele scored on a throwing error from the Idaho State shortstop.
After going scoreless in the second, the Sun Devils opened the floodgates in the third. With no outs in the third, center fielder Alix Johnson hit a solo homer to deep left center. The home runs continued, as Soria then hit one over the fence to drive in Kemp and Steele, giving ASU a 6-0 lead. Before the end of the frame, catcher Katee Aguirre had added her own solo shot to left-center field, giving ASU a 7-0 advantage.
Steele added a three-run homer in the fourth before Soria sent another ball deep to left for the Sun Devils' 11th and final run of the night.
In the circle for ASU, Mackenzie Popescue (7-0) threw four shutout innings, only allowing three hits. Jenna Makis came on in relief in the fifth, her first showing in the circle for the Sun Devils, and allowed the Bengals' only run of the night.
