ASU softball gets fifth overall seed in NCAAs

TEMPE, Ariz. – The Arizona State softball team received the fifth overall seed in the NCAA tournament on Sunday and will host the Tempe Regional from May 17-19 on ESPNU.

The Sun Devils, who went 45-10 in the regular season, will open their 25th NCAA tournament against San Jose State squad that went 42-15. With a No. 5 seed, ASU is in line to host both a regional and a super regional.

The Tempe Regional field includes ASU, San Jose State, San Diego State (35-18) and Georgia (38-19). San Diego State and Georgia play at 12:30 p.m. PT on Friday; ASU and San Jose State play afterwards at 3 p.m.

Each regional is a four-team, double-elimination tournament, with 16 winning teams advancing to the super regionals.

Super regionals will be held May 23-26 on eight campus sites, with wo teams playing in a best-of-three tournament format. The winners from each site advance to the NCAA Women’s College World Series in Oklahoma City from May 30-June 5.

The other regional hosts as top seeds were, in order: Oklahoma, Florida, Oregon, Texas,  Missouri, Tennessee, Michigan, LSU, Alabama, Washington, Kentucky, South Alabama, Nebraska, Louisville and Texas A&M.
