ASU hockey blows out Arizona in first Div. I game

GLENDALE, Ariz. -- Arizona State, in its first game as a fully-fledged NCAA hockey program, rolled through Arizona for an 8-1 victory in front of 5,385 at Gila River Arena on Saturday night.
"Great night to be a Sun Devil," ASU coach Greg Powers said. "Great crowd. We appreciate everyone coming out, that was awesome."
History was made when junior defenseman Connor Schmidt opened the scoring with an unassisted goal just over seven and a half minutes into the game. Freshman forward Jack Rowe took the honors on the next goal then it became the Jordan Masters show.
The freshman forward scored the next two goals en route to taking home the game's first star. Freshman defenseman Joey Raats was the second star with three assists and Schmidt was the third star, adding an assist and tying for the team lead with a +3 rating.
Both goalies who dressed to play saw game action, with junior Robert Levin starting the game and freshman Ryland Pashovitz taking over midway through the second period.
In total, ASU outshot Arizona 49-9 and won 68 percent of the face-offs. ASU has now won 48 of the last 49 rivalry games against Arizona.
