TEMPE, Ariz. — Arizona State and second-year football coach Todd Graham have reached an agreement on a contract extension through June 30, 2018.
The agreement extends Graham's contract for 18 months, covering the 2017 season, and increases his annual salary retroactively to $2.3 million for the 2013 season. He'll get additional raises of $100,000 for 2014, 2015 and 2016, and then $50,000 raises each Jan. 1 starting in 2017. His base salary for the next five years will be $12.45 million. Graham had been scheduled to make $2.05 million for this season.
ASU has not announced an agreement, but Arizona Board of Regents documents reveal the board is expected to approve the extension at a Sept. 26 meeting. Graham's current contract expires Dec. 31, 2016.
An extension and raise for ASU athletics director Steve Patterson is also on the Regents agenda. Patterson's contract will be extended from March 31, 2017, to June 30, 2018, and his salary will go from $365,000 to $450,000.
Graham's amended contract also includes new performance incentives — ranging from $25,000 for winning a non-major bowl game to 20 percent of his annual salary for a Pac-12 championship to half his annual salary if ASU were to win a national championship.
There are additional bonuses built in for total wins, ranking in polls, coaching awards and the team's academic performance.
Under the new terms, ASU can terminate the contract at any time but would be required to pay Graham 100 percent of salary still owed on the contract. If Graham were to terminate the contract to take another coaching position, ASU can collect up to $1.5 million in damage from him.
As with his original contract, the extension prohibits Graham from obtaining employment as a head coach with any other Pac-12 team through the end of the contract's term.
In his first season at ASU, Graham led the Sun Devils to an 8-5 finish, the program's first winning season since 2007, and a win over Navy in the Kraft Fight Hunger Bowl, the school's first bowl win since 2005. ASU is 2-0 so far this year and ranked in the Associate Press Top 25 Poll — at No. 23 — for the first time since Oct. 30, 2011.
Along with Graham and Patterson, sports performance coach Shawn Griswold has agreed on a new contract. Griswold, often importance to the program is often touted by Graham, will receive a contract expiring the same date as Graham's with a starting salary of $235,000 annually and annual increases of $10,000 each July 1 beginning in 2014.
Griswold runs ASU football's strength and conditioning programs and has worked with Graham at his previous two stops, Tulsa and Pittsburgh.
