STANFORD, Calif. -- Junior right-hander Darin Gillies turned in a career-long outing for the second consecutive start, but the Arizona State baseball team fell to Stanford 1-0 in the series finale on Saturday at Sunken Diamond.
Gillies (1-3) allowed just one run on four hits and one walk in eight innings for the Sun Devils (21-16, 10-8), who put the tying run on base in four of the final five innings. Gillies conceded a solo home run in the fourth inning but otherwise allowed just two runners to reach second base. He has given up just one earned run, two walks and six hits in the past 14 innings he's pitched.
For the Cardinal (15-17, 6-9), starting left-hander John Hochstatter (5-1) carried a no-hitter into the sixth inning and scattered three hits across 7 2/3 scoreless innings to earn the win. Right-hander AJ Vanegas closed out the final 1 1/3 frames to record his fourth save of the season.
Junior first baseman Nate Causey went 2 for 3 and sophomore designated hitter RJ Ybarra hit a double, but those were the only three hits ASU managed. Causey and Ybarra singled and doubled in consecutive at-bats in the top of the sixth to put runners at second and third with one out, but Causey was thrown out at home on a fielder's choice off the bat of sophomore third baseman Dalton DiNatale, and freshman catcher Brian Serven lined out to the end the frame.
Stanford first baseman Danny Diekroeger accounted for the only run of the game in the bottom of the fourth inning with a solo home run to right field.
Causey hit a two-out single in the top of the eighth but was stranded on a pop-up to the shortstop, and Serven walked with one out in the ninth but was thrown out at second on a game-ending double play.
