PEORIA, Ariz. -- Diamondbacks starting pitcher Bronson Arroyo spent Tuesday morning in the training room at Salt River Fields with a stiff back instead of getting ready for the afternoon start he was supposed to make.

The D-backs scratched Arroyo form his scheduled start against the Padres, replacing him with Randall Delgado. D-backs manager Kirk Gibson didn't have a timetable for Arroyo's return to action but said Arroyo wouldn't do any throwing Tuesday.

"I think he's still pretty jammed up," Gibson said.

Gibson did say he's not overly concerned, especially given Arroyo's injury history. Arroyo has never gone on the disabled list as a major leaguer.

"Not at this point," Gibson said. "We've got a long ways to go. He's never really had a history of missing starts, so I feel confident he'll be fine."

Arroyo was not made available to the media Tuesday morning.

Outfielder Cody Ross continues to progress in his return from the fractured hip suffered late last season but at this point does not appear likely to make the trip to Australia for the D-backs' opening series against the Dodgers March 22 and 23.

"I'd say Sydney probably not," Gibson said. "Probably more likely it would be opening day against the Giants (on March 31)."

Ross ran the bases at 60 or 70 percent Monday and will do so again Wednesday or Thursday. Gibson said Ross could be sliding within a week -- a big step toward his playing in a spring training game.

"He could come fast," Gibson said. "We're kind of just baby steps. The big thing with him is comfort level of what he does."

Gibson said he has yet to discuss with Ross any possible changes to his sliding habits but suggested some might be needed. Gibson recalled Ross injuring his knee in 2003, while Ross was a rookie in Detroit and Gibson the Tigers' bench coach, on an unusual play at first base -- the same circumstances as his hip injury last season.

"We're going to try to give some more thought around the bases," Gibson said. "He's going to have to be more controlled around the bases."

-- Minor league outfielder Danny Dorn suffered a non-displaced fracture of his right wrist after being hit by a pitch Monday night. He was set to have another X-ray but initial estimates were that Dorn would miss at least six weeks. The injury won't require surgery, though.

"They said it was a clean break," Dorn said. "They said if you're going to have it break it was a decent place. We've just got to wait now, and hopefully it heals quickly."

Dorn was taking part in his first big league camp with the D-backs after spending 2013 in the Tigers system with Triple-A Toledo.

-- The D-backs sent 15 players out of big league camp Tuesday. Right-handed pitchers Chase Anderson, Charles Brewer and Alex Sanabia were assigned to Triple-A Reno. Left-handed pitcher Santos Rodriguez was assigned to Double-A Mobile. The following players were reassigned to minor league camp: LHP Andrew Chafin, INF Mike Freeman, RHP R.J. Hively, OF Justin Greene, INF Sean Jamieson, OF Evan Marzilli, RHP Willy Paredes, C Steven Rodriguez, RHP A.J. Schugel, RHP Seth Simmons, RHP Jess Todd.
