TUCSON, Ariz. -- The Arizona women's basketball team came up short in its comeback effort against Washington, falling 79-69 on Monday night at McKale Center.
The Wildcats trailed by as many as 22 before rallying in the second half. A 13-0 run closed the margin to six with 8:42 to play, but the Huskies held on from there.
Senior guard Candice Warthen scored 15 of her 18 points in the second half while also recording seven assists and seven rebounds for Arizona (7-6, 0-2 Pac-12). Sophomore Dejza James came off the bench to score 13 points, and freshman Charise Holloway added 11.
For Washington (12-2, 1-1), sophomore guard Kelsey Plum scored 14 points, well below her nation-leading average of 25.8..
"I give Washington credit for coming in and doing what they needed to do to get the win," rizona coach Niya Butts said. "I think they knocked down shots early from the 3-point line. We blew some assignments there. They did a good job of knocking down those shots and made us pay. We waited until it was too late to play."
The Wildcats will be back in action Thursday night, hosting Arizona State, before traveling to Tempe for a rematch with the Sun Devils on Saturday.
"We are going to be ready to play and hopefully we can get a full 40 minutes," Butts said.
