Angels release Bobby Abreu

The Angels Friday announced that Bobby Abreu has been released from the club’s Major League roster.
Tonight’s transaction was made by club General Manager Jerry Dipoto.
Abreu, 38, entered his 17th Major League season in 2012, his fourth campaign with
the Angels. He appeared in 456 games with the Halos over the last three-plus
seasons, batting .267 (443/1662) with 239 runs scored, 103 doubles, 43 home
runs, 246 RBI and 75 stolen bases. In 2011, he hit .253 (127/585) with 30
doubles, eight home runs, 60 RBI and 21 stolen bases in 142 games. His streak
of 150 games played ended at 13 consecutive seasons – the streak matched Willie
Mays’ MLB record (1954-66). Abreu also notched 20 stolen bases for the
13th consecutive season in 2011, the longest active streak
in MLB.
The Venezuelan native is just one of four players all-time with at least 500
doubles, 250 home runs &
350 stolen bases (Barry Bonds, Rickey
Henderson and Craig Biggio). He is the only player in MLB history to
log 20 HRs, 20 SBs & 40 2Bs in a season
five times. Abreu is a two-time All-Star
(2004 & 2005), a Gold Glove recipient (2005) and a Silver Slugger honoree
(2004).
For his career, the veteran has appeared in
2,255 games batting .293 (2389/8152) with 1,413 runs scored, 557 doubles, 58
triples, 284 home runs, 1,330 RBI and 393 stolen bases. He ranks eighth among
actives with 2,389 hits and 1,413 runs, second in doubles (557), seventh in RBI
(1,330) and sixth in stolen bases (393). Abreu’s 2,389 career hits rank third
all-time among Venezuelans.
