Angels designate LeBlanc for assisgnment

Mike Scioscia insists Tuesday's move to designate Wade LeBlanc for assignment was not "reactionary" to the pitcher's less than stellar start Monday night.

However, a different outcome than the 3.1 innings, seven hits and six earned runs he gave up in the loss 7-1 loss to the Marlins seemingly would have changed his fortune.

As a result, the Angels were in search of bullpen help Tuesday.

"On the short term basis we're just desperate for an arm up here tonight," Scioscia said. "Wade didn't quite pitch as deep as we'd hoped and I think our focus has to be on making sure that we're not overworking some guys in the bullpen so we need an arm and that was the only move we had open to us right now."

Relief pitcher Yoslan Herrera was recalled from Triple-A Salt Lake.

In six appearances with the Angels this season, Herrera has tossed six innings with a 4.50 ERA. All signs indicate he's improved since his last outing in an Angels uniform, Apr. 29, according to Scioscia.

Meanwhile, there's a vacant spot in the Angels' rotation. That spot previously belonged to Garrett Richards. LeBlanc manned it Monday night. Saturday night is in question.

"We are going to start a pitcher," Scioscia quipped.  "We're going to have a starting pitcher Saturday. Let's get through Tuesday and we'll see where we are."
