LAS CRUCES, N.M. - New Mexico State junior forward Tabytha Wampler scored 23 points and senior guard Madison Spence added 17 in Wednesday night's 72-62 loss to Utah at the Pan American Center.
Wampler, Spence and senior guard Jasmine Lowe spearheaded a furious comeback in the second half. The Aggies (6-6) trailed by 15 at the half but closed the gap to six with a 17-6 run early in the second half before Utah (6-7) hung on for the win.
Wampler had 16 second-half points, and Lowe scored 11 of her 13 after the break. Spence was perfect on three 3-point attempts and was 4 for 4 from the foul line.
The Aggies made 26 free throws and committed just six turnovers to stay in the game on a night when they shot just 26.7 percent from the field.
Two starters -- senior Danisha Corbett and sophomore Camila Rosen -- left the game in the second half with apparent knee injuries. Their status is unknown at this time.
"We worked hard tonight," said head coach Darin Spence. "Our effort was good in the second half. In the first half we were a little sluggish, but my mind right now is with our two starters that hurt their knees tonight."
Utah guard Iwalani Rodrigues led all scorers with 26 points. Forward Michelle Plouffe added 18 for the Utes, and Michelle Harrison had a game-high 12 rebounds.
The Aggies will be off until traveling to Albuquerque to take on New Mexico on Thursday, Dec.30.
