After 10 Years, The Roof Hatch Is Back At Talladega

Waltrip in 2003, Kahne in 2013

It was 2003 when Michael Waltrip popped out of his roof to celebrate his EA Sports 500 win at Talladega Superspeedway.

A decade later, Denny Hamlin will have the same opportunity at the Aaron’s 499. Unfortunately for Hamlin, his escape is planned for the first race caution and not after taking the checkered flag.

If Brian Vickers (Hamlin’s replacement) happens to drive the #11 to a win, we see no other way to celebrate than to pay homage to MW and bust through the roof. However, if Waltrip ends up in Victory Lane in his Alabama Crimson Tide paint scheme, we’d advise against a repeat performance.

No roof hatch + attempted roof escape = potential large headache.
