African champs to go ahead despite South Africa hosting ban

JOHANNESBURG (AP) South Africa's track and field federation says the African championships will not be affected by a government ban on hosting major events.
Athletics South Africa says its president met with the sports minister this week and the government has agreed to give its ''full backing'' to the event in Durban, scheduled for June 22-26.
Sports Minister Fikile Mbalula announced Monday that he was revoking the privileges of four of South Africa's top sports federations to bid for or host major events, because they hadn't kept agreements they made to create more opportunities for black athletes.
Athletics, rugby, cricket and netball were all sanctioned by Mbalula.
However, ASA says the African championships, which come two months before the Olympics, will go ahead because they had already been awarded to South Africa.
