ACC Report Card: Honor Roll

ACC Report Card: Honor Roll

Some of the ACC’s top players, including the conference's veterans, had spectacular performances in some of the league’s most important battles of the week.

North Carolina’s Harrison Barnes, Virginia’s Mike Scott, and Miami’s Kenny Kadji and Malcolm Grant all had very nice weeks, but didn’t quite make it onto this list.

Here is this week’s ACC Hoops Honor Roll:

Tyler Zeller, North Carolina – The 7-foot center scored 38 points, grabbed 20 rebounds, blocked three shots and registered four steals in a pair of wins. He had 21 points and 17 rebounds in a rout of N.C. State.

Terrell Stoglin, Maryland – The sophomore guard totaled 44 points in two games, one a home loss to Duke and the other a win over Virginia Tech (28 points vs. the Hokies). Stoglin didn’t take as many questionable shots, which is a nice sign of progress for coach Mark Turgeon.

Ryan Kelly, Duke – The 6-foot-10 junior bounced back from a poor stretch of performances by scoring 14 points off the bench to spark the Blue Devils in a 13-point win at Maryland, and then scoring 16 points in a home victory over St. John’s. After struggling to convert free-throw attempts for a few games, especially in key moments, Kelly made both attempts at Maryland and was 10-for-12 versus the Johnnies.

Andre Young, Clemson – The senior guard scored 19 points, handed out five assists and registered a pair of steals in a needed 71-60 victory over visiting Wake Forest. This was on the heels of a 29-point performance a week earlier, though it was Clemson’s only game of the week. Young ignited a Tigers team that made just one of its first 15 shot attempts.

Michael Snaer, Florida State – The former McDonald’s All-American followed up his buzzer-beating win at Duke with an 18-point performance in a rout of Wake Forest in Winston-Salem. Snaer drained all four of his 3-point attempts, helping set a tone for the Seminoles’ success.

Player of the Week:

Mason Plumlee, Duke – The 6-foot-11 junior was dominant in wins at Maryland and at home versus St. John’s. Plumlee combined for 38 points and 29 rebounds, and he even dished out six assists. His well-rounded improvement has been awfully impressive.

Team of the Week:

Virginia – Just when the masses said the ACC was a three-team battle at the top, in part because of Virginia’s loss of center Assane Sene, the Cavaliers picked up a pair of impressive wins, including at N.C. State, to improve to 17-3.

Disappointment of the Week:

N.C. State – The Wolfpack reverted back to Sidney Lowe form during its ugly loss at UNC and couldn’t capitalize on a terrific opportunity against Virginia, dropping that game as well. State still has a chance to play its way into the NCAA Tournament, but it has a ton of work to do.
