A Proposition for you

A Proposition for you

Published Jan. 29, 2013 12:00 a.m. ET

The betting sentiment around the Super Bowl is that if you can't find something to bet on, you aren't looking hard enough. Proposition bets are big business with oddsmakers around the world using the 2 weeks leading up to the title to test their creativity and revenue generating potential. Nielsen ratings, Gatorade bath color, Beyonce's song list: they''re all on the menu at offshore books this time of year. Unfortunately the legal oufits here in Las Vegas are limited because each prop bet posted on their boards has to be deemed a game of chance with a winner clearly defined through the boxscore. While you won't find the length of the national anthem available for wagering in Nevada, you can find a multitude of cross sport props to keep you invested throughout the day.  Thankfully for the millions of Vegas vistors flooding Vegas for the big game, oddsmakers spare no creativity in creating their extensive betting menu.

The man who deserves credit as the "godfather of props" is bookmaking legend Jimmy Vaccaro. Back in 1985 when the Bears took on the Patriots in Superbowl XX, he hung a prop Will William "the refrigerator" Perry score a touchdown? The prop opened at 40-1 for the big fella and by kickoff bettors crashed the price all the way down to 5-1. Much to the book's chagrin, Perry found his way to paydirt putting a dent in the house's balance sheet.  However, what started that day has become a prop craze now responsible for big business throughout the state. Vacarro is one of many bookmakers now hanging a laundry list of props every year to accomodate the seasoned pro and novice alike. For example this year, to capitalize on the huge fan interest around QB Colin Kaepernick, Vacarro and his team posted 23 Kaepernick specific props to give every bettor plenty to think about at the William Hill sportsbooks.

Prop discussion in Las Vegas also needs to include the talented oddsmaking team over at the Las Vegas Hotel (formerly the Hilton). The group led by Jay Kornegay offers more options every year than any book in town. Rugby, golf, NBA, NHL, soccer: they're all tied  into the Super Bowl Sunday menu in some capacity. Included below are a variety of cross sport props you'll find on the LVH betting board for the big game this weekend.  If that isn't enough, a further look down the list are Bovada's entertainment props for everything else a sports bettor could possibly imagine.  My picks on the game? Well you'll just have to drop by OKTC on Friday for a few winners to line your wallet with before we head into the offseason.
