45 shots not enough as Denver tops Gophers

Marc Cheverie stopped 44 of 45 shots and Denver broke a scoreless tie early in the third period Friday as the Pioneers beat visiting Minnesota 3-1 in WCHA action.
Cheverie shut out the Gophers twice in October and had a scoreless streak of 238:22 against the Gophers before Patrick White scored late in the third period with goaltender Alex Kangas pulled for an extra attacker. White's goal cut Denver's lead to 2-1, but Rhett Rakhshani scored an empty-netter 17 seconds later to seal the win for the Pioneers.
Denver (19-6-4 overall, 13-4-4 WCHA) remains a point behind first-place St. Cloud State, while the Gophers (13-14-2, 8-11-2) lost for the fourth time in their last five games.
The teams meet again tonight at 8 p.m. in Denver. Coverage begins at 7:30 p.m. on FOX Sports North.
