2012: The year of the ACC quarterback

The ACC can’t put the 2011 season out to pasture too quickly, as it turned into one of the most unfortunate in league history. Next fall, however, will come with promise and possibilities.
The most important position in football is quarterback, and 11 of the ACC’s 12 teams return their starting signal callers. The only school losing theirs is Miami, and Stephen Morris – the likely starter – has plenty of experience.
Intrigue also lies at the doorsteps of Maryland, which essentially returns two starting quarterbacks, and North Carolina, where Marquise Williams may push incumbent Bryn Renner to run new coach Larry Fedora’s spread offense.
In addition, David Watford could give Virginia coach Mike London a difficult decision to make regarding returning starter Michael Rocco, who handled the duty pretty well since late October.
It’s no secret the ACC needs to repair its football image, which took a serious hit in bowl season, but at least it can point to having more experience at quarterback returning than the other BCS conferences to optimistically suggest the nose is pointed in the right direction.
