MOSCOW (AP) Yuri Borzakovsky of Russia, the men's 800-meter champion at the 2004 Athens Olympics, has announced his retirement.

His last race will be on Sunday at the Russian Winter meeting in Moscow, which he calls ''the passing of the baton from me to the younger generation,'' in comments reported by the Tass news agency.

Borzakovsky was one of the world's top 800 runners for more than a decade, winning world indoor gold in 2001 and the European title in 2012, as well as two silver and two bronze medals at the world championships.

However, following his triumph at the 2004 Olympics, he couldn't repeat at the 2008 and 2012 Games, on each occasion being eliminated in the semifinals.
