"I didn't know that it was that big a deal," said South Carolina Gamecocks head football coach Steve Spurrier in response to the reaction to his opening a Twitter account on Monday.

To answer the unfiltered, quotable 69-year-old Spurrier -- it is and it isn't a big deal. Rarely is anything uttered on Twitter a big deal, but Spurrier's joining the platform is significant because there's a lot of people interested in what the seasoned coach may have to say. Spurrier has gained more than 35,000 followers in less than five hours.

Many of them, myself included, think there's great potential for comedy if a fired-up Spurrier decides to use Twitter as a vent. "You won't see anything dramatic," he told ESPN.com's Chris Low. "I hope not anyway."
