Published Jan. 30, 2013 8:23 a.m. ET

Sonny Dykes, new football coach at California, joins Matt this week to talk about the challenges associated with his new job. He discusses new NCAA recruiting rules and upcoming signing day, talks about his spread offense and offers thoughts on Arizona football, where he used to coach.

Among his observations:

On why he accepted the job: "When you sit down and look at the big picture, Cal is pretty green grass in a lot of different ways."

On the intense coverage of signing day: "Recruiting in general has kind of gotten a little bit out of hand. As coaches, we have to be really careful about the message we are sending to these kids."

A thought on Arizona football, a school he worked for: "Rich (Rodriguez) obviously has a plan. He knows what he is doing and did a tremendous job this year offensively."
