10 things: Downey middle linebacker Cameron Carr

Published Oct. 9, 2014 11:57 a.m. ET

"Versatile" is the way Cameron Carr likes to describe his game.

The Downey middle linebacker is also the team's leader in receptions. However, it's on the defensive side of the ball where he'll likely make his mark at the next level.

Basketball was his first love, and he played up until the time he suffered a broken ankle playing the sport during his freshman year.

Now he spends his Friday nights frustrating opposing offenses. Once it's all said and done for the class of 2016 product, he could be one of the next best linebackers to come out of Downey High School.

In the meantime, here's 10 things you may not know about him:

Favorite sport growing up

Carr loved basketball. He started playing when he was four-years-old and was serious about the game from the beginning.

"I used a fake name to play at the YMCA so I played with six and seven year olds when I was four," he said.

Favorite team

Indianapolis Colts

Carr was a quarterback at one point in his young football career and, like many, wanted to play like Peyton Manning. He was also a fan of Marvin Harrison.

Late-night snack

If it's late and Carr is looking for something to eat, he's reaching for a bag of Spicy Nacho Doritos.

What's in your iPod?

If the headphones are on, there's a good chance Carr is listening to some underground rap.

"A lot of stuff where people are like 'Who is that?'" Carr said.

Favorite movie

"Friday Night Lights."

Biggest fear

"Getting hurt and not being able to play football never again," Carr said.

Pregame ritual

Carr's pregame ritual includes about an hour's worth of Ray Lewis motivational speeches and a lot of food.

He begins by getting a "five buck box" at Taco Bell, and that's before having team meal with his Downey teammates. Following that he listens to the Lewis speeches before nap time.

No. 4

The number is special to Carr. Both his dad and uncle wore No. 4 during their playing careers.

Favorite sports memory

For that, Carr goes back to the hardwood as a 12-year-old.

"It was a travel tournament," Carr explained. "We were down 15 (points) with about three minutes left and they told me 'Hey you need to take over.' I don't know how I did it but I hit five 3s in a row and I brought us back."

Carr and his team didn't win the game but as he tells the story, he notes "it felt good to bring my team back."
