VIENNA (AP) World Cup giant slalom champion Eva-Maria Brem is out for the rest of the season after breaking her lower left leg in a training crash.
The Austrian ski federation says Brem will undergo surgery later Friday, and will need between four and six months before getting back on skis. She will miss the Alpine skiing world championships in February.
The federation says Brem crashed at Pass Thurn, Austria, during training for the World Cup slalom in Levi, Finland, next week.
The 28-year-old Brem, who has been voted the 2016 sportswoman of the year in Austria, won two giant slaloms last year to take the GS season title. She had a disappointing start to the new season, finishing 26th in Soelden two weeks ago.
