Vos wins opening round of women's road World Cup

Former world champion Marianne Vos held off Dutch compatriot Kirsten Wild and Sweden's Emma Johansson to win the opening round of the women's road World Cup on Saturday.

Vos won a sprint over the final 200 meters to repeat her 2011 victory in Drenthe.

The 25-year-old from the Netherlands, who is targeting another world championship along with the gold medal at the London Olympics, finished in 3 hours, 23 minutes and one second.

The 12 riders involved in the sprint were all credited with the same time.

Megan Guarnier of the United States finished in 23rd place. Many of the top American riders are competing in the Pan Am Road and Track Championships in Argentina.

The second round of the World Cup is March 25 in Italy.
