The U.S. is clinging to a 2-1 lead over Japan after 75 minutes in the women's gold medal soccer game.

Japan threatened to tie it up in the 74th when Nahomi Kawasumi took a shot from close range that Amy LePeilbet cleared off the line. That set off a mad scramble in front of the goal, but the Japanese couldn't convert.

Carli Lloyd scored both goals for the Americans, who are seeking their fourth Olympic title. But Yuki Ogimi pulled one of the goals back in the 63rd minute, tapping a shot from the corner past U.S. goalkeeper Hope Solo.

The game is a rematch of last year's World Cup final, won by Japan in a penalty shootout.
