ASPEN, Colo. (AP) Mikaela Shiffrin is leading after the first run of a World Cup giant slalom while American teammate Lindsey Vonn lost her left ski and slid off course.
Shiffrin finished in 59.04 seconds Friday and leads Federica Brignone of Italy by 0.11 seconds. Lara Gut of Switzerland is third.
The 20-year-old Shiffrin is trying to become the first American to win a World Cup race at this venue since Tamara McKinney in 1981. Shiffrin has never won at home - all 15 of her wins have come in Europe.
This was Vonn's season debut. She broke her left ankle three months ago during training and skipped the opening race in Austria. Vonn lost her ski around a gate and slid into the netting.
