JASNA, Slovakia (AP) Mikaela Shiffrin built a massive lead in the opening run of women's World Cup slalom on Sunday.
In tough conditions due to snowfall, the Olympic champion from the United States led Veronika Velez-Zuzulova of Slovakia by 1.67 seconds. Another Slovakian racer, Petra Vlhova, shared third with Wendy Holdener of Switzerland, 1.88 behind Shiffrin. The rest of the field was more than two seconds off the pace.
Frida Hansdotter of Sweden, who tops the slalom standings ahead of Velez-Zuzulova, had 3.10 to make up in the second run.
Shiffrin is unbeaten in slalom racing since February last year but can't win the discipline title this season having missed five races during a two-month injury layoff.
