The U.S. Anti-Doping Agency notified star U.S. sprinter Tyson Gay that he tested positive for a banned steroid, the BBC reported Friday.
Gay withdrew from the world championships in July, when he announced that he had tested positive for a banned substance. Gay’s positive test could lead to a two-year suspension, which is the standard penalty for use of steroids, human growth hormone and other serious doping violations.
"We appreciate Mr. Gay taking responsibility for his decisions and for voluntarily removing himself from the World Championships. As this is an ongoing case we have no other comment at this time," USADA CEO Travis Tygart said in a statement Friday.
Gay holds the American record in the 100 meters when he ran it in 9.69 seconds in 2009.
