Notre Dame outlasted Butler in Saturday night’s third round contest, but the victory was bittersweet for head coach Mike Brey. Brey, who will be taking the Irish to the Sweet 16 for the first time since 2003, revealed after the game that he’d lost his mother to a heart attack earlier in the day. Brey added that the win was a “tribute to her”, and that she must have been “with” the team down the stretch.
Notre Dame next gets the winner of Kansas vs. Wichita State. Our condolences go out to Brey’s family and friends.
