Felix Neureuther of Germany held a commanding lead after the opening run of a men's World Cup night slalom in Schladming on Tuesday.
Chasing his first win in more than a year, Neureuther led Stefano Gross of Italy by 0.53 seconds after a near-flawless run on the Planai course.
Norway's Henrik Kristoffersen, who won five of the six previous slaloms this season, was 1.10 behind in third. Last year's winner, Alexander Khoroshilov of Russia, had 1.13 to make up in the second run.
Marcel Hirscher started faster than Neureuther but was slowed as his goggles got fogged up. The four-time defending overall champion from Austria finished 2.59 behind.
