Melbardis wins 4-man bob world title for Latvia's 1st gold

IGLS, Austria (AP) Driver Oskars Melbardis of Latvia led his team to the four-man bobsled world title on Sunday for his country's maiden gold medal.

In seventh position after Saturday's two heats, Melbardis and Daumants Dreiskens, Arvis Vilkaste and Janis Strenga won the final two runs to edge Francesco Friedrich of Germany by 0.04 seconds.

Friedrich, who won the two-man competition last week, led after winning both heats on the opening day but lost his 0.41-second advantage over Melbardis by coming fourth and fifth, respectively, in Sunday's heats.

Rico Peter of Switzerland finished 0.22 behind to take the bronze, and two-time defending champion Maximilian Arndt of Germany was 0.49 off the pace in seventh.

Lamin Deen of Britain crashed in the third heat but the team escaped without serious injuries.
