In the time it took a group of U.S. athletes to get to the Olympic Park from Heathrow Airport they could have reached the birthplace of the games in Greece.
While Heathrow officials were crowing how well they handled their busiest day ever, the four hour bus ride for the athletes from the airport to the Athletes Village showed the logistical challenges London Olympic officials have to overcome.
Mayor Boris Johnson tried to make light of the wayward bus, saying it gave the Americans a great chance to see more of London. But with Heathrow in the far west of sprawling London and the Olympic Park in the east, the challenges of getting athletes and visitors to Olympic venues on time looms large for organizers.
