The 2016 European Swimming Championships will be held in London, the first major competition to be staged at the 2012 Olympic pool since the games.

British Swimming announced Friday it won the bid.

Swimming, diving and synchronized swimming will take place at the London Aquatics Centre, which will also host the European Masters Championships.

CEO of British Swimming David Sparkes says "the competition is an important stepping stone to enable our elite athletes to compete at a high-quality competition early in 2016 before they travel out to the Olympic Games."

More than 5,000 total competitors are expected at both events.

London Mayor Boris Johnson says the news is "a glowing testimony for Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park's status as a world-beating destination for elite sport."
