IOC director general Urs Lacotte is stepping down because of health reasons.
The International Olympic Committee said Monday the mutual decision was made ''in view of the current state of Urs Lacotte's health.''
The 56-year-old Swiss has reportedly received previous treatment for heart problems. The IOC says ''it is not desirable for him to continue.''
Lacotte's resignation goes into effect Thursday.

Lacotte oversaw the administrative offices of the IOC in Lausanne.
IOC President Jacques Rogge says ''Lacotte has performed his functions with competence, integrity and loyalty.''
The IOC says Lacotte will remain a member of the organization as Assignments Adviser.
