The former Soviet republic of Kazakhstan is reportedly considering a bid for the 2022 Winter Olympics.

The ITAR-Tass news agency says government officials expressed their interest in bidding during a meeting Monday with International Olympic Committee President Jacques Rogge.

The talks took place in Astana, the Kazakh capital, after a meeting of the executive committee of the Olympic Council of Asia.

Kazakhstan's commercial capital, Almaty, bid for the 2014 Winter Games but did not make the list of finalists. Those games were awarded to Russia's Black Sea resort of Sochi.
