The Italian Canoe Federation has sent an athlete home from a training camp in Australia after banned substances were found in his hotel room.

The federation did not name the athlete Sunday, but the ANSA news agency said it was Franco Benedini, who competed for Italy in the K4 1000 meters at the 2008 Olympics.

The substances were discovered by one of his coaches.

Ten male athletes were attending the camp in Penrith.
