Honduras tops Panama 3-1 in CONCACAF tourney

Mario Martinez and Alexander Lopez scored in the second half to lead Honduras to a 3-1 victory over Panama in the CONCACAF Olympic qualifying tournament on Friday night.

Eddie Hernandez put Honduras' Under-23 squad in front in the 19th minute, completing a strong sequence by Los Catratchos. Anthony Lozano's free kick went to Hilder Colon, who headed it across the goalmouth to a waiting Hernandez.

Martinez made it 2-0 in the 47th minute, booting a 35-yard shot that bounced off the field and into the near post, past goalkeeper Luis Mejia.

Yairo Glaize scored in the 55th minute for Panama, but Lopez clinched the match with a shot from 30 yards in the 87th minute.

The first game of the tournament for both teams featured a pair of Major League Soccer players. D.C. United midfielder Andy Najar played 59 minutes for Honduras, while FC Dallas left back Carlos Rodriguez totaled 90 minutes for Panama.

Both nations continue Group B play on Sunday. Honduras meets tournament favorites Mexico, and Panama plays Trinidad and Tobago.
