German sports head Manfred von Richthofen dies

BERLIN (AP) Manfred von Richthofen, the honorary president of Germany's national Olympic federation who presided over a shake-up in German sports management, has died. He was 80.
The German Olympic Sports Federation (DOSB) says on Friday that Richthofen died the day before in Berlin.
Richthofen was a nephew of the German World War I flying ace of the same name, widely known as the Red Baron, news agency dpa reported.
A hockey player and then coach in the 1950s and 1960s, he later had a long career in sports management and served from 1994 to 2006 as head of the German Sports Federation.
Richthofen was a prime mover behind that organization's merger with the national Olympic committee to form the DOSB, whose honorary president he became in 2006.
